Start with central Leiria
Begin your day in Leiria’s centre, then use the central area as the starting point for the museum and castle visits. A walk through central Leiria gives you a route-focused way to take in this part of the city.
Mercado Santana and Capela de São Pedro can fit around your central stroll.

Choose a museum stop
Museu de Leiria and Moinho do Papel offer different ways to spend a museum visit: one focuses on the territory’s history, while the other presents traditional paper-making and grain-milling processes. Pick one as your main stop, or check the opening patterns before deciding if you have time for both.
Museu de Leiria
Museu de Leiria occupies the Convento de Santo Agostinho at Rua Tenente Valadim, n.º 41, 2410-190 Leiria. Its two main exhibition spaces include a long-term presentation on the history of the territory and a space for temporary exhibitions.
The museum’s origins go back to the Museu Regional de Obras de Arte, Arqueologia e Numismática de Leiria, created in 1917 following efforts by Tito Larcher.
The convent church was built from 1577, and the convent complex from 1579. The process of returning the convent to city life began in 2006. For details on the collections, location and visit, use this guide to Museu de Leiria.
Moinho do Papel
Moinho do Papel is at Rua Fábrica do Papel, n.º 13, 2410-103 Leiria. Its history is traced to 1411, and the municipal site describes it as one of the first paper mills in the Iberian Peninsula. Rehabilitated by architect Álvaro Siza Vieira, it presents traditional paper-making and grain-milling processes, and visitors can participate in paper-making.
From October through March, it opens Monday to Friday from 09:30 to 12:00 and 14:30 to 17:00, and Saturday from 14:00 to 17:30; it closes on Sundays and public holidays.
From April through September, weekday hours stay the same, while it opens on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 09:30 to 18:00. Guided visits and educational services require advance booking.
Check the official site before you go for current opening details and visit arrangements.

Visit Leiria Castle

For a closer look at visiting the hilltop site from town, see this Leiria Castle visit guide. Build your day around the castle’s seasonal closing time and last entry, rather than leaving the visit until after the gates close.

Add a nearby landmark if time allows
Capela de São Pedro can be a short additional stop around the central part of your day. Santuário de Nossa Senhora da Encarnação is another option if you have time to add a landmark beyond the centre.
If you would rather add another museum, Casa-Museu João Soares is a more substantial detour, so consider it only if you are setting aside extra time.
