A Leiria city centre walk can take you from the central streets to Capela de São Pedro, Mercado de Sant’Ana and Leiria Castle. The hotel area is close to the centre, making it practical to link these stops on foot.

  • Leiria city centre is about a five-minute walk from a two-star hotel in central Leiria.
  • Capela de São Pedro is about a seven-minute walk from Hotel Leiriense.
  • Mercado de Sant’Ana is a cultural venue with free admission.
  • Leiria Castle has seasonal daily opening hours and paid admission for most age groups.
Starting in central Leiria

Starting in central Leiria

Start in central Leiria, then walk towards Largo de São Pedro before continuing to Mercado de Sant’Ana. These stops bring together historic architecture and a former market building now used for cultural activities.

The official urban-walk leaflet describes a route that passes Mercado de Sant’Ana and recommends visiting Leiria Castle before beginning the descent. That makes the castle a natural final stop if you want to follow the route’s suggested sequence.

A short walk to Capela de São Pedro

A short walk to Capela de São Pedro

Capela de São Pedro stands within Leiria Castle’s walls, at Largo de São Pedro. Portugal’s property-heritage register records its classification as a National Monument by decree dated 16 June 1910.

Take time to distinguish the chapel from Igreja de São Pedro, which is also identified as a historic site in Leiria. The visitor site describes the church as Romanesque and notes that it later served as a theatre and grain store before becoming a city museum space.

Mercado de Sant’Ana occupies a building designed in 1921 by architect Ernesto Korrodi as a municipal market. Reconstruction began in 1924 and finished in 1931; the building stands on the site of the former Convent of Santa Ana, dissolved in 1880.

Refurbished in 2002 for cultural activities, the venue now has an exhibition space, two auditoriums, open-air event galleries and shops in exterior arcades. It is at Largo de Santana 3.

Admission is free. Weekday hours are 09:00–12:30 and 14:00–17:30, while other opening times depend on events. For practical details about the venue, see how Mercado de Sant’Ana works as a cultural venue.

Add Leiria Castle to the walk

Leiria Castle makes a fitting final stop, and the official urban-walk leaflet recommends visiting it before starting the descent. The castle is at Rua do Castelo, 2400-114 Leiria, and its north and south mechanical access routes are free to use.

The castle is open daily from 1 October to 31 March, 09:30–17:30, with last entry at 16:30. From 1 April to 30 September, it is open daily 09:30–18:30, with last entry at 17:30. It closes on 1 January, Easter Sunday and 25 December.

Admission is free for ages 0–10; €1.05 for ages 11–25; €2.10 for ages 26–64; and €1.05 for visitors over 65. Groups of more than 30 pay €1.50 per participant. Check the official Leiria visitor site before you go.
