A brief history of the chapel

A brief history of the chapel

Capela de São Pedro dates to about 1176 and is classified as a Monumento Nacional. Visit Portugal describes it as the only surviving example of Leiria’s Romanesque architecture, with notable influence from Coimbra’s medieval art.

The chapel served residents who lived outside the city walls. Before the new Sé building was constructed, it was the seat of the bishopric until 1573. After religious orders were dissolved in 1834, the building became a theatre and storehouse. Restoration from 1933 to 1937 revealed elements of its earlier origins. Its classification decree dates to 16 June 1910.
