What Moinho do Papel is

What Moinho do Papel is

Moinho do Papel is a museum set in a rehabilitated watermill on the banks of the River Lis. The mill complex was renovated with the contribution of architect Siza Vieira and has operated as a museum since 2009.

The museum brings together the site’s industrial history and the riverside setting. Visitors can see the old mill wheels and large waterwheels, with displays presenting traditional paper-making and cereal-grinding processes.

The museum also offers educational workshops, an exhibition room, a conference and meeting room, guided visits by appointment, a shop and a car park. A one-day Leiria itinerary can place the mill alongside other city stops.

The mill and Leiria’s paper-making history

The mill and Leiria’s paper-making history

The mill’s recorded paper-making history dates to 1411, when King João I granted Gonçalo Lourenço de Gomide a royal licence to make paper in Leiria. The site’s working history extended beyond paper: it was also used to grind corn, wheat and rye, and to produce olive oil.

The museum connects paper production with the arrival of printing in Leiria and the beginning of Jewish influence in the area. Its account of the site puts paper-making within a broader history of the town, rather than treating the mill as a single-purpose workshop.

The River Lis remains part of the story of the mill’s work. The museum says visitors can buy flour produced using the river’s energy. The collections at Museu de Leiria offer another perspective on the city’s history.
